Design Narrative
Meilleur Nom
Architecture, upholstered.
The Concept
Start With The Shell
Most sofas are designed from the inside out, pick a cushion, build a frame around it. Meilleur Nom flips that order entirely. The starting point wasn’t comfort, it was architecture: a single, continuous shell, sweeping and self-contained, the kind of form you’d expect from a sculpture gallery before you’d expect it from a living room.
Only once that shell existed did the question of comfort arrive: what do you put inside something built like architecture, so that sitting in it feels nothing like sitting in a building?
The answer is velvet, deep and plush, sitting completely at ease inside a shape far more severe than the cushion resting within it.
The Design
The Shell And What It Holds
The exterior is finished in obsidian lacquer, poured into one sweeping, continuous curve with no hard corners to interrupt it. It wraps the seat the way a hull wraps a boat, less like a frame, more like a single gesture.
Inside that shell, the seating is cushioned in deep, plush velvet. It doesn’t try to match the shell’s precision. It’s soft where the shell is hard, loose where the shell is exact, and that contrast is exactly the point.

Up Close
Three Materials, One Continuous Line
Look closely and the shell isn’t one material, it’s three, layered so precisely that they read as a single form.

The Lacquer
A deep obsidian shell, poured and polished into one continuous sweep.

The Walnut
A band of American walnut grounds the shell at floor level, warm against all that polish.

The Bronze
Hand-polished bronze marks the armrest corners, precise and deliberate, the only sharp edges in the piece.
One Shell, Two Seats
Built To Furnish A Whole Room
The same architecture that defines the sofa carries into a matching lounge chair, so the shell’s idea, the sweep, the layered materials, the contrast of hard and soft, can anchor more than one seat in the room.
A Sofa Built Like A Statement
Meilleur Nom was never going to be a background piece. Its name is French for “best name,” a small wink at its own confidence, and the design backs it up: a shell precise enough to be architecture, holding a seat soft enough to disappear into. Available in a range of fabrics and finishes, the idea underneath never changes.
